The Jason Lang Scholarship Program was established in memory of Jason Lang. Late Jason Lang is a 17-year-old high school student who was killed in a school shooting.

This scholarship program gives recognition to the outstanding academic achievement of the students continuing full-time studies of Alberta post-secondary and doesn’t just stop at recognition but rewards such efforts made by the students via giving scholarship award to students thereby encouraging them to continue in their undergraduate or professional program of study.

These scholarships are funded by the Government of Alberta through Alberta Advanced Education and are administered by the University of Alberta in conjunction with Alberta Student Aid.

This scholarship is open to freshmen undergraduates students to study in any school of their choice in Canada. The number of scholarships is limited, so the Foundation is incapable to provide awards to all eligible candidates.

Jason Lang Scholarship Eligible Nationality

Jason Lang Scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, recognize and reward the outstanding academic achievement of Alberta post-secondary students and encourages them to continue in their undergraduate or professional program of study

Jason Lang Scholarship 2021 Eligibility Requirements.

Candidates must:

* Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada

* Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 between September to April of the previous academic year at an eligible Alberta post-secondary institution.

* Have completed at least 80% of a full-normal course load (i.e. at least 24 units of course weight for most programs) between September to April of the previous academic year at an eligible Alberta post-secondary institution.

* Transfer students will be assessed for the Jason Lang Scholarship by the institution they are currently attending and are encouraged to apply by the Fall Application Deadline.

* Transfer students are not eligible for the Louise McKinney Scholarship.

* Be continuing in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate degree program or continuing in any year of a professional or after-degree program.

* Be enrolled full-time in at least one term in the upcoming academic year

* Be an Alberta Resident as defined by the Alberta Scholarship Act:

  • A person who has maintained permanent residence in Alberta for a period of 12 consecutive months immediately prior to attending a post-secondary institution, or
  • Advertisement
  • A person whose parents or guardians have maintained permanent residence in Canada for 12 consecutive months immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies and reside in Alberta, or
  • A person who was married to an Alberta resident immediately prior to commencing post-secondary studies
  • Co-op work terms will not be included, but co-op students will be assessed based on paired academic terms. It is recommended that co-op students apply each year and Student Financial Support will determine your eligibility.
  • Students who participated in an official University of Alberta exchange should apply and Student Financial Support will determine your eligibility.

Jason Lang Scholarship 2021 Deadlines

Application Open: July 15

Fall Application Deadline: September 15, 2021

Winter Application Deadline: January 18, 2022.

How to Apply for Jason Lang Scholarship 2021/2022 Session

Submit your completed application form to the Student Awards Office at your educational institution.

Notification

You will be notified by Student Financial Support approximately one month after the competition closing date as to whether or not you have been nominated.

Jason Lang Scholarship – Fall

Award eligibility: 

Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, must be an Alberta resident.

Government of Alberta and administered by Alberta Student Aid

Award criteria: 

Enrolled in 24 credits or more between September to April during the previous academic year and achieved a minimum 3.2 grade point average. Students must be continuing full-time in the second or subsequent year of an undergraduate program.

Jason Lang Scholarship Submission

Completed Nomination Form must be submitted no later than the specified date outlined in the email to the qualifying students.

Notes: 

Students can only receive one (1) Jason Lang Scholarship per year and up to three (3) Jason Lang Scholarships in a lifetime

If Louise McKinney Scholarship is received for the same period, nominee is not eligible for the Jason Lang Scholarship.

Jason Lang Scholarship 2021 Selection Process

Students who meet the eligibility criteria are nominated by the Student Awards Office at the Alberta post-secondary institution where they currently attend. If the student has transferred from another publicly funded post-secondary institution, the institution they currently attend will confirm the previous year’s eligibility criteria.
